Basic Education Library
The USC North Campus Basic Education Library is on the first floor of the new building, Fr. Edward Norton Hall, at the edge of the USC North Campus property on General Maxilom Avenue, Cebu City. It is a service unit that supports the teaching-learning process through
the provision of appropriate, relevant, and responsive information resources for the basic education subjects and
the provision of assistance to users of these resources by means of library instruction, reference service, document delivery, etc.
Customers may use the library from 7:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 7:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon Saturday.
The Library is closed on Sundays and holidays.
The library collection includes picture books or easy books, story books, Filipiniana, general references, subject reference books, periodicals, information file, picture file, maps, and Caroliniana.
ID Always Required
- The library is open to all USC North Campus kindergartners, grade school pupils, high school students, teachers, and employees. To be able to use the library, the customer must show one's school ID. The pupil�s or student's identification card must be duly signed by the school registrar. The customer must present this ID when borrowing books and materials.
- The customer must personally fill out the Library Card which is available at the circulation desk. The card is free of charge.
- All the customer's loans will be recorded on his library card.
- Library cards are not transferable. A customer is held responsible for materials issued on his card.
Use and Circulation of Library Materials
- General reference books like dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, yearbooks, almanacs and handbooks should be read within the library only.
- Easy books can borrowed for home reading for one day.
- Non-fiction books, including Filipiniana, can be borrowed for 3 days and renewed for another 3 days.
- Fiction books can be borrowed by high school students for 2 weeks and by grade school pupils for 7 days and renewed for another 7 days.
- Loose and bound issues of magazines are for library use only.
How to Check Out Materials- Present ID and the materials to be borrowed at the circulation counter.
- Get the book card from the book pocket on the back inside cover of the book.
- Fill out the book cards with date, name, grade or year and section or position.
- See to it that the circulation assistant stamps the due date on the date due slips.
- When leaving, show library materials borrowed at the exit.
How to Find a Book or Periodical
- The collection is arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System: 001 - 999.
- Check the author, title or subject of a book in the card catalog. In the left hand margin of each catalog card is the call number which indicates where the book is shelved in the library.
- General reference books are identified by GRef over the call number in the catalog card. These volumes are shelved separately from the circulating collection and cannot be borrowed for outside use.
- General reference books include almanacs, atlases, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and yearbooks.
- Filipiniana books are identified by Fil over the call number in the catalog card. They are also shelved separately but can be borrowed for 3 days' use.
- The periodical index will help locate articles in periodicals.
- Ask the librarian for assistance in using the card catalog or periodical index. She knows many short cuts in finding specialized materials and will be pleased to be of help.
Overdue Items
- Most customers are considerate enough to return the books on time so others may use them. But should some fail to return circulating books on the due date, they will be charged 25 cents' fine per day.
- If it is a reserved book, the charge is 2 pesos per day. Other materials when overdue are also charged 25 cents per day.
- No fines will be levied on holidays when the library is closed.
- A receipt will be given upon payment of fines.
- Help keep the books circulating and avoid suspension or cancellation of borrowing privileges.
Lost & Damaged Books
- If a library book or other item is lost or damaged, report this immediately to library personnel at the circulation counter.
- A period of time to look for the book is given.
- A replacement of the exact same book will be required if it is not found.
- Delay in reporting the loss will cost a customer 25 cents' fine per day of overdue, the cost of the book plus processing fees.

- Respect the needs of other library users and help us maintain a library that is a quiet "workshop of gentlemen and young ladies as well as the workshop of scholars."
- Take good care of borrowed books.
- Return borrowed books promptly.
- Help keep the library clean and orderly at all times.
